Ulysses Everett McGill versus Odysseus Essay - 752 Words
Ulysses Everett McGill from ââ¬Å"O Brother Where Art Thouâ⬠is a man of action whereas Odysseus from ââ¬Å"The Odysseyâ⬠is a man of morality. Judging primarily on these statements, whom appears to be a man that one should follow? Many are attempting to justify how can two such great leaders be compared to one another? Everett is a worthy representation of Odysseus because of their similar attributes such as boasting and dishonesty. Yet at times both can be braver than any other, sharing not only attributes, but also similar backgrounds as well. Correspondingly Everett and Odysseus are crowers, braggers, who want to feel superior to their dumbfounded crew. They both want to prove they are superior in knowledge and imagine their excessive pride toâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Defending that Everett is a worthy representation of Odysseus, they both attempt to present their level of prestige compared to others without considering the consequences of their false actions. Furthermore, after examining Odysseus, and Everettââ¬â¢s actions we can strongly believe that they can be recognized for their bravery and acts of unselfishness. Stumbling upon this strange gathering they see their comrade Tommy Johnson, the guitarist that they met on their expedition, was being take to the stage to be lynched. Coming to his senses, Everett instantaneously decided to save his companion by disguising himself as a member of the gathering. Creating a distraction among the crowd by cutting the ropes of the burning cross he led his friend to safety, and fled with his troop. Similarly Odysseusââ¬â¢ returning home from his long journey had to confront the suitors who were challenging each other to win his wife, Queen Penelope. Odysseus was assumed dead by the suitors, and when he reveals himself at his pa lace the suitor beg for mercy. Odysseus in rage does not forgive the suitors who tried taking his throne, but instead he fearlessly said ââ¬Å"When all are gone if Iââ¬â¢m alone they can dislodge me.â⬠Odysseus fought the suitors with allShow MoreRelatedAnalysis Of Homer s The Odyssey 918 Words à |à 4 Pages24, 2016 Everett versus Odysseus The character Ulysses Everett McGill from ââ¬Å"O Brother, Where art thou?â⬠is a worthy representation of Odysseus from the ââ¬Å"Odysseyâ⬠. Proctor and getting Mary Essay Example For Students
Proctor and getting Mary Essay The second way the build up of slow tension is shown by the faked attacks. Again Abigail and the girls are they reason for these faked attacks. They pretend that Mary has sent a spirit onto them. By doing this they are trying to turn Mary against Proctor and getting Mary to side with the girls, which they finally do. Straight away Abigail goes a cold wind has come and accuse Mary. This creates tension and pressure on Mary once again. This is ironic because the girls at this point know whats exactly happening. This is evident Mary goes Lord save me! and Danforth replies you send your spirit out?Ã The attacks show that she was put under a lot of pier pressure to side with the girls and by doing this it lead to Mary changing her decision. The third way slow tension is built up through out the scene is by Proctors confession and the dramatic irony of Elizabeths natural lie. Her husband finds it hard to admit to lechery. His shame of the officials of being blinded by the girls is shown through Proctors voice. But Proctor does a brave thing and because he confesses, because its his wife he really wants to save. He is telling the truth because he has already ruined his good name and has nothing to lose now. This shows us that the lengths these people tried to go to clear their name but didnt succeed. Then Danforth brings his wife n to prove and back up everything he has said. This again may suggest that he doesnt believe everything that Proctor has told the court this is when there is a climax and things get a little out of control. All emotions run wild. Danforth seems to be calling the shots now. In the film we see Elizabeth stuttering and cant get the words out of her mouth. This maybe because she doesnt want to say anything wrong that may harm Proctor. Its all very tense at the moment this is where we will find out what happens and Danforth asks is your husband a lecher? and the tension is broken by Elizabeth replying no sir the people are shocked and astonished and Danforth has her removed from the court. The irony here is that she knew everything about it but yet she said no to save her husbands name and the story now is concluded.Ã The forth way in which the slow build up of tension throughout the scene emphasises the emotional trauma suffered by the victims of both Salem and McCarthy is by the build up of mass hysteria to a hectic climax at the end of act 3. Mary again is the victim because she told the court the girls were fake. Abigail then pretends that she is talking to a yellow bird.; In coincidence the yellow bird is Mary and has come to attack her. The only way Mary is going to stop Abigail is by siding with her and this exactly what Abigail wants. Then we see the girls mimicking Mary. Im here, Im here! The impression we get is that Mary is now the devil and once again Danforth has sided with the girls by saying Have you compacted with the devil. This shows that Abigail has used her power and got Danforth on her side. All the above shows how much pressure is being put on her and the innocent people. Mary couldnt withstand the pressure being put on her so she decided to go with the girls when she says that Proctor is the devils man. It shows how ones decision can be influence by pressure. .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 , .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .postImageUrl , .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 , .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3:hover , .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3:visited , .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3:active { border:0!important; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3:active , .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3 .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0cfe703d2c517a6a118aa042f685bbe3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Positive atmosphere EssayThe final way in which slow build up of tension throughout the scene emphasises on emotional trauma suffered by the victims of both Salem and McCarthy is by Proctors damning lines at the end of the scene. Proctor is outraged and loses it completely. He says in a damning way I say- I say- God is dead! The people in the courtroom would have been in shock now. Their minds we made up that Proctor was most probably the devil now. But on the other hand Proctor nothing and nothing to lose he had lost everything, his name, his dignity and his wife. So now Proctor is faced with naming names or face being hanged. The dilemma here is that Proctor is now defenceless his only hope was Mary but she had decided to side with the girls and now might as well give up rather then getting other people into trouble. This shows how naming names was so powerful that Proctor could have stopped him from getting himself hanged and got someone else hanged. But he didnt. Having considered the dramatic nature of this scene, I believe it criticises Salems authority and of McCarthy trials. It shows how corrupt the courts were and they simply wanted to send down as many people as they wanted. The innocent characters are being forced and pressurised to name names or else be hanged. The damning lines show how much people would do to jus clear there names but the courts werent prepared to listen. It shows a little rumour has ripped apart society and this will be hard to fix back together. It also shows the emotions and love between the characters and how far they would go to save there loved ones.

Prepared under the supervision of Earl Cyril G. Rosaldo. -57150311150 INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION TO RADIATION THERAPY Radiation Therapy, often referred to as radiation oncology , began approximately a year after x-trays were discovered in 1895. It is a medical specialty that involves the treatment of malignant and benign tumors by the app lication of ionizing radiation. A medical student, Emil H. Grubbe, together with a physician friend treated an advanced case of breast cancer with x-ray on January 19, 1896. He continued his research but eventually contracted skin cancer and lost his left hand. By 1899, the first cancer, a basal cell epithelioma, has been cured by radiation. The initial responses observed in the treatment of skin and other superficial tumors generated the hope that a cure for cancer had officially been found. This hope was soon followed by a wave of disappointment and doubt when tumor recurrences and injuries to normal tissues began to appear. The treatments often involved single massive exposures aimed at the eradication of tumors, and the patients who survived the immediate post irradiation often developed major complications. Because of this disappointing result, the use of x-rays to treat tumors would soon have been abandoned had it not been for laboratory and clinical work by Claud Regaud and Henri Coutard . They found that by administering fractionated doses of radiation (smaller doses rather than a large single does), they could achieve the same tumor response but without serious injury to adjacent normal tissues. The clinical pioneers in radiation therapy, mostly surgeons and dermatologists, used the " erythema d ose," or radiation dose necessary

Passive Periphrastic Latin Construction
Passive Periphrastic Latin Construction The passive periphrastic construction in Latin expresses the idea of obligation of must or ought. A very familiar passive periphrastic is a phrase attributed to Cato, who was bent on destroying the Phoenicians. Cato is said to have ended his speeches with the phrase Carthago delenda est or Carthage must be destroyed. There are two parts to this passive periphrastic, one adjectival and one a form of the verb to be. The adjectival form is the gerundive - note the nd before the ending. The ending is, in this case, feminine, nominative singular, to agree with the noun Carthago, which, like many place names, is feminine. The agent, or in Catos case, the person who would be doing the destroying, is expressed by a dative of agent. Classical Mythology Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Classical Mythology - Essay Example He writes: "As a guiding principle I believe that every poem must be its own sole freshly created universe, and therefore have no belief in 'tradition' or a common myth-kitty... To me the whole of the ancient world, the whole of classical and biblical mythology, means very little, and I think that using them today not only fills poems full of dead spots but dodges the poet's duty to be original." (Larkin 1983:69) Larkin has a right to his view but from what we have witnessed, literature from Renaissance till today is in awe of Greek and Roman mythological characters. And when we discuss mythology, we simply cannot ignore the role played by Homer in reinforcing myths. And one of his key epics dealing with images of classical mythology was Iliad. In this paper, we shall focus on the role of heroism in ancient world with reference to Iliad and how a modern hero borrows from ancient definition of a hero. Homer's Iliad presents the oldest yet most enduring picture of hero and heroism. Who is a hero and what constitutes heroism are questions that Iliad answers but in a manner which may not appeal to modern sensibilities. For us today, hero is a man of who is sensitive, courageous and responsible with compassion for the community. However apart from courage, no other attribute mattered for construction of a heroic figure in Greek epics of ancient times. Homer follows tradition when he creates heroe s and develops a heroic code in his work Iliad but there are occasions where the poet tried to deviate from conventional picture of a hero and from these deviations emerge a new and more reformed image of heroism. A modern day hero borrows from ancient picture of a hero in terms of enduring courage. However a serious distinction must be made here. When we talk about modern hero in this paper, we are only referring to modern mythical heroes like superman and Spiderman and not necessarily heroes in ordinary literature. This distinction is made because while in the ancient plays, heroes were people with extraordinary courage and strength, in modern literature, a protagonist is called a hero and he can be as weak or flawed as any ordinary person. Fishwick explains this difference in these words: "Different ages and cultures vary the heroic personality, but all heroes are true to their age. Whatever their situation, the motives they urge are elementary, the morality they advocate is obvious. History is not very effective without people, and people are ineffective without leaders. The search for heroes is inherent in human nature. Pre-literate societies allow men, heroes, and gods to stand on a footing of tolerable equality. In remote areas of the world men are still deified in their own lifetime. The idea of aloofness in super-human power comes late in history." (Fishwicck, 1954: 3) Homer's ideal hero may have many shades but he is invariably a traditional image of ruthless ambition and unbridled courage at least for most of the epic: "Everywhere can be found, reshaped according to shifting cultural standards, the ideal hero, chevalier sans pear et sans reproached, the crafty hero, the boaster, the grim and aging warrior, the slightly buffoonish hero, the aged king, the warrior virgin, the wise counselor, or the young reckless fighter." (Cedric H. Whitman: p. 26) Homer's heroes most notably, Achilles and Agamemnon were products of a society that weighed a man's worth in terms of public honor.

Functional Analysis of Capsim Business Simulation Essay
Functional Analysis of Capsim Business Simulation - Essay Example In addition, the paper analyses how each of the functional unit integrates and interacts with other functional units. Finally, the paper provides my recommendations for a business leader in managing a $40 million manufacturing business. The simulation provides a rare chance in experiencing how managing a full business while utilizing the benefits of reports helps in showing the correlations existing between the outcomes in a business and the management decisions (Forgang, 2004). The units of the simulation include production, marketing, finance, research & development (R&D), Human resources and (TQM) total qualities management (Bossche, Gijselaer & Milter, 2011). Production involves the behaviors that firms exhibit at the market places in regards to the creation of goods along with services. This is mainly done for the purpose of satisfying their consumer wants (Dusseau & Wilson, 2010). The production managers involved in a business should engage in comprehending the relationships th at exist between the business inventory levels and their carrying costs along with their market shares (Dusseau & Wilson, 2010). They should also understand the relationship existing between their production capacities and the number of excess hours that their employees have to work to achieve their goals (Sitomer, 2010). This is because a business may end up incurring losses in their operations when their expenses in catering for the overtime hours worked and the cost of this labor exceeds their earnings (Clawson & Haskins, 2006). The production managers in a business will be responsible for producing beneficial results through their efforts of automating the production processes and increasing their manufacturing capacities (Forgang, 2004). Marketing, in a manufacturing environment, refers to the processes through which businesses indulge in creating value for their customers while at the same time building strong relationships with them (Wankel, Arthur & Stoner, 2009). It also in volves creating solutions along with relationships that will either be of long or short term benefit to the business (Dusseau & Wilson, 2010). The marketing manager in a business will be responsible for comprehending the relationship that exists between their margins on prices along with contributions and prices along with demand (Forgang, 2004). They will also be responsible for understanding the relationships existing between the promotions of their budget along with increasing awareness for the business products. The marketing manager and his team should be charged with the task of establishing the business sales budget and accessibility to these funds (Sitomer, 2010). The marketing department in a business may be affected by the new products that are being launched by the research & development departments since they had not been accounted for in their operations and are unknown in the market (Wankel, Arthur & Stoner, 2009). The activities of these departments can also be affect ed by a businessââ¬â¢s production capacity along with the costs it incurs in its operations (Dusseau & Wilson, 2010). Finances in a business are used as measures for ascertaining whether a business is making profits on its investments or not. Finances in a business are mainly affected by their time values since they change on a day to day basis (Sitomer, 2010). Businesses allocate their money and assets to certain uses but under conditions of uncertainty or certainty (Bossche, Gijselaer
